What Is Dermaplaning?

Surface exfoliation with a controlled manual technique.

Dermaplaning works at the surface of the skin and does not involve an injectable or chemical exfoliant.

During dermaplaning, a sterile blade is passed carefully across the skin at a controlled angle. The procedure removes superficial dead skin cells while also removing fine vellus hair from the treated area.

It may be considered by clients who want to discuss surface texture, dull-looking skin or the appearance of fine facial hair as part of their skin-care routine.

Treatment is not automatically appropriate for every person or every skin condition. The consultation gives time to assess your skin, discuss relevant history and decide whether dermaplaning is suitable at that appointment.

Your Dermaplaning Appointment

What happens during treatment?

The process is kept straightforward, with consultation and suitability considered before treatment begins.

01

Your skin, concerns, relevant history and expectations are discussed so suitability can be considered before proceeding.

02

03

Aftercare

Aftercare guidance is provided following your treatment, taking account of your skin and the procedure carried out.

Suitability & Aftercare

Dermaplaning should still be approached as a skin procedure.

Dermaplaning is a cosmetic skin procedure and is not completely without risk. Temporary redness, sensitivity or irritation may occur following treatment.

Because a blade is used against the skin, small cuts, abrasions or localised irritation are also possible.

Dermaplaning may not be appropriate where there is active acne, broken or irritated skin, active infection or another skin concern that makes treatment unsuitable at that time.

Skin response and cosmetic outcome vary between individuals and no particular result can be guaranteed.

If your skin is currently inflamed, irritated, infected or you are unsure whether dermaplaning is appropriate for you, please raise this during your consultation before treatment.

Dermaplaning FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation procedure in which a sterile blade is carefully passed across the skin to remove superficial dead skin cells and fine vellus hair.

Does dermaplaning remove facial hair?

Dermaplaning removes fine vellus hair from the treated surface as part of the procedure. It is not intended as a treatment for every type of facial hair.

Will facial hair grow back thicker after dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning removes hair at the surface of the skin and does not alter the hair follicle itself. Removing vellus hair in this way does not change the follicle into producing a thicker type of hair.

Is dermaplaning suitable for everyone?

No. Suitability depends on your skin and relevant history. Treatment may need to be avoided or postponed where there is active acne, infection, broken skin, significant irritation or another contraindication.

Can dermaplaning cause redness?

Temporary redness, sensitivity or irritation can occur after treatment. Individual skin response varies.

Is dermaplaning the same as a chemical peel?

No. Dermaplaning is a manual surface-exfoliation procedure using a blade, while a chemical peel uses a chemical exfoliating agent. Suitability for either treatment should be considered individually.
